silicone and acrylic are not a good combo. The acrylic has oils that do not allow a good bond. Try Weld-on 40.

If the collar has a lock on it it might work but J is right in that silicone won't bond to acrylic.Weld-on 40 will permanently bond it but since its fucked up to begin with you might as well do it.This way you can still use the skimmer and get some use out of it.

How come you can't just go down to the hardware or auto parts store and snoop around for a little sheet of rubber gasket material and cut yourself out a seal. For that matter hydraulic shops usually have all kinds of O rings, you may find one to fit under the cup. Seems drastic to seal it up, you may want to clean it someday.

Ditto that, too much quick and dirty kludge work is poor for the soul. Laughing

I wasn't aware that it was a situation an o-ring could cure. I must have misunderstood the problem. Rolling Eyes

I dont know exactly what the problem is but I thought they were saying that the cup doesnt seal to the body sometimes and causes a vacuum. Im guessing that it is sucking air at the joint from time to time? Not sure. It sounds like it could be an easy fix with a little tinkering. I think if this is the problem then just figuring out how to make a positive seal shouldnt be too hard.

Ok, I just backtracked and it looks like water leaks out at the cup seal back into the tank. Must be one hell of a leak. Seems like it might be something fixable without getting too carried away, but I havent seen exactly what he is dealing with so maybe glue is the only way.

The cup does have an O ring on it. It will only go in 1 spot, as the cup won't lock in any other way. When I ran the skimmer in deep water it didn't do this, but I wasn't getting real good results. I might try a bit of vaseline around the or O-ring and see how that goes. It'll be handy to have this skimmer working for cycling my next tank. I'd prefer to be able to remove the cup, just in case.

Cool, Id pull that O ring off and get a new one. All O rings are not made equal, they get old and loose shape and get flat spots after a while. You can probably get one the same size and maybe a bit thicker to seal tighter. Id just take it in to any place you know that repairs hydraulics or rebuilds pumps and rams for heavy equipment. Auto parts stores may not have one that big but you never know. Contact the skimmer manufacture even to see if you can get one, or measure the neck and order one online. Im sure it can be done.

In this hobby you can never have too many good skimmers Smile

Chris, try and find a new oring like phil said, auto stores carry them. Maybe go with a thicker one. Also don't use vasiline as any oil based lube is bad for rubber materials. Don't you know your not suppose to use oil base on a rubber dude. Use a water based lube ; )
